MICROSCOPES AND HIGH-RESOLUTION PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION

To perform endodontic treatment with precision, Midtown Root Canal is equipped with this highly specialized piece of equipment. Dr. Jakob uses the high magnification microscope in every surgical and non-surgical procedure. Seiler instruments in conjunction with a Canon DSLR camera give us the tools necessary to visualize and document the most intricate anatomic details present inside every tooth. Case documentation enhances our office communication with you and your general dentist. In addition, Dr. Jakob provides microscope training to general dentists.

CONE BEAM CT SCAN (3D IMAGING)

Our office is equipped with a Kodak limited field (low radiation) 3D-Scan that is specifically designed for use in endodontics. The CBCT scan produces a three-dimensional image of the tooth and surrounding bone. Fractures, missed canals, bone loss, and pre-surgical or retreatment planning, are areas that have improved significantly since the incorporation of this exciting technology to endodontics. The details and information obtained from the scan represent a marked increase in diagnostic and treatment planning accuracy.

Dr. Jakob has completed research and written on the topic - "The use of 3D computed tomography in the treatment planning of failing root canals.” Use of the scan requires an understanding of what to look for and where to look for it! In the past when deciding if a tooth can be saved a patient would often have to undergo an exploratory surgery. Now all that is needed is a simple scan and accurate reading of that scan in order to produce optimal tooth saving results.

DIGITAL X-RAYS

At Midtown Root Canal we see to it that only important x-rays are taken. If you have previous x-rays from your referring doctor, please forward them to our office prior to your appointment.  If we do need to take x-rays, our sensors are the best in the market. Reduced exposure to radiation and the instant production of digital images, keep your visit short and your records in one place.  We can easily transfer these images to referring doctors, insurance companies, or other specialists. Radiation is reduced by 80% of that in conventional film radiographs.

In conjunction with a clinical examination, digital imaging allows us to:

  • Detect cavities and tooth decay

  • Determine remaining crown enamel and dentin

  • Determine number of roots, type of canals, and the shape of a tooth's roots

  • Diagnose the presence of jaw lesions (areas that may indicate loss of healthy bone)

ULTRASONIC INSTRUMENTS

Working in small spaces that are often smaller than the size of the tip of a needle, can present obvious challenges. With the aid of the microscope, we can visualize the inside of the tooth with extreme clarity. But what about working there? Thanks to ultrasonic instrument tips which vibrate at 30,000 cycles per second we can navigate more easily within the tiniest of spaces and work in a deliberate manner. This technology can enhance the doctor's procedural accuracy during the very delicate stages of surgical or non-surgical endodontic procedures. This may include the removal of posts or broken instruments and locating very difficult to find calcified canals.
